Our Story

Since its inception in 1988, City Fare Catering is a woman-owned and operated professional, scratch kitchen.  We take pride in the extraordinary care we put into each client’s event and were validated for this effort by being voted best cater for 8 years by the Hartford Advocate Readers Poll.

City Fare has had a strict policy to “buy locally, think globally.” Whenever possible we feature seasonal and local food to create quality dishes in a wide range of cuisines.

Francesca Reale, Founder and Executive Chef, was living proof of the adage, “If you want something done well, ask a busy person to do it.”  In addition to being an owner, Fran had a finger in more than a number of civic pies.  Awarded Hartford Courant Citizen of the Year, Fran also was an integral member of many city commissions and civic groups.

Fran was educated at Paier College of Art and Harvard Graduate School of Design.  She was pastry chef at L’Americain, pantry and pastry chef on the opening crew of Max on Main, and partner and co-chef for the Grill and South Avenue Caterers in New Canaan, Connecticut.  Fran, along with her sister, Phyllis Reale Risley and, Teresa Preziosi, opened City Fare in Hartford’s South Green Neighborhood in 1988.  Subsequently, Fran founded and served as creative director of the Children’s Culinary Institute of Connecticut in 1992.  In January 2011, we lost Fran to breast cancer.

City Fare continues to give back through fundraisers, donations, children culinary classes, and volunteer work.  We take pride in our community and always looking for new avenues to keep ourselves “busy.”
